Step 1: Create a Google Tag Manager account
First off, before getting back to the Magento admin panel, you should register a Google Tag Manager account via this link here.

You can set up the “container”. The container is a set of rules, tags and macros which is configured for a specific site. You should fill the container with your website’s domain name. For stores that have multiple store sites, you will have to create several containers. Also, you should set it as “Web” Container as you are running a website, not a mobile app. Then, click Create.
Step 2: Copy the snippet of the GTM install code
After that, you can click on the section as follows:
Then, copy the code generated by the GTM system like below and paste it into each page of your store site.
Step 3: Get the Container ID
Finally, you can access the Admin section to collect Container ID to install in Magento.
How to configure Magento 2 Google Tag Manager
When you finished adding Google Tag Manager to Magento 2, now it’s time to configure the module:
General Configuration
You need to come back to the Magento Admin, choose Stores > Configuration > Mageplaza Extensions > Google Tag Manager. In the top field, select Yes in Enable field to activate the extension.

Next, select Yes in the second Enable field to enable the use of the Google Tag Manager feature which helps to update and control all tags on the site.
In the ID Variable Base On section: Select how the ID value of the product is displayed, either according to the product ID or product SKU.
For the Google Tag ID field, admins need to paste the paste container ID you got earlier on the Admin page to update some information on an event. If the field is left blank or filled with incorrect information, the Container ID will unable to display information in detail.
How to Create New Google Tag Manager Tags
Let’s get back to the Workspace page to create new GTM tags.
- Step 1: Click on

- Tag configuration: Select a tag type to begin set up
- Triggering: Choose a trigger to make this tag fire
Select the appropriate tag type (e.g., Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel)
Now, set up the tag configuration with suitable information based on your needs.

If you want to add a new trigger, click on the + sign at the top right corner.

After choosing the trigger type, select the place where this trigger fires. Each trigger type brings individual settings to fire. Fill in the information required, and save it.
- Step 3: Save Tag
Note: If you are utilizing Google Tag Manager to control your Magento 2 enhanced ecommerce (Google Analytics), try to avoid duplicating your data!
Make sure to remove the current Google Analytics tracking code from your pages. Otherwise, the old GA code will still collect data, leading to the new GTM tag reporting with duplicate data.
Particularly, to delete the tracking code, you need to click on Admin > Container Settings > More menu
(as three vertical dots) > Settings > Delete
. You will have 30 days to change your mind and restore the container. After that time, Google will permanently delete it.

How to check GTM on your website
The final step is to check whether GTM has been added by going to your site frontend. Then, open the home page > press CTRL + U to open the view source > press CTRL + F to find GTM > if you find gtm in the code like the image below, congratulations, you have successfully added gtm. Here’s how it should look like:
